FALL SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED FOR AGES 12- 18

High Sierra Lacrosse League Commissioner, Bud Haley announced today that an eight week program for lacrosse will start on Wednesday September 8th from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Swope Middle School. The purpose of the fall program is to stimulate two types of lacrosse players. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are set aside for beginning players with little to no experience and for those players with a starting knowledge of the sport. Tuesdays and Thursdays will also host experienced players of the High School level hoping to expand their skills and team play. Those players hoping to make the Reno eNVy Team, the regional select team from the Tahoe Basin and Reno/Carson area, will have mandatory practice on Thursday of each week. In addition, beginning and new players may attend on Thursday; however their effort that day will be oriented toward work on skills alone. The HSLL will not take players who have graduated from High School for the eNVy program and as a result will limit participation to current high school students.
Players age 12 and older by Sept.8, 2010 may participate in the 8 week program. Registration will be held on Wednesday September 8 from 5-6 pm at Swope Middle School. The cost of the 8 week program is $30 per player and all participants must be a member of US Lacrosse. US Lacrosse is the governing body of lacrosse in the United States. Its membership provides monthly information via a national publication, secondary insurance and support for the growth of the sport. For more information about US Lacrosse membership go to www.uslacrosse.org .
Practices will be held from 5-7 pm Tuesday through Thursday at Swope Middle School, located at 901 Keele Drive in Reno, NV. The coaching Staff will be Jeff MacBean, Bill Tubman, and Mike Henry. All three of which have excellent credentials in the lacrosse world. For additional information about this program or anything to do with lacrosse in the region, go to www.highsierralax.org .

High Sierra Lacrosse League holds it's first league playoffs and Championship

The High Sierra Huskies defeat Galena High School 11-8 for the first HSLL Championship
It was a cold windy day on the field at Reno High School Friday. In spite of the weather, 170 avid fans showed up to see the first High Sierra Lacrosse Championship Game ever played. Two teams played their hearts out and proved that lacrosse in the region has taken the next big step forward.
The game opened with the High Sierra Huskies placing their first goal 2:19 seconds into the first quarter. Galena High School followed up 30 seconds later tying the game 1-1. That tie held for 3 minutes until the Huskies began a 3 goal run which was broken at the 7:35 mark when Galena made their second score. The Huskies got back on the scoreboard twice more and the quarter ended 6-2.
Both teams added one goal apiece in the second quarter ending the half 7-3. Each team was evenly successful in the face off arena by sharing a 50% win loss ratio for the entire contest. The real difference was in the penalty box. Galena served 5 minutes compared to 30 seconds for the Huskies and their goalie #99 Gaffney recorded 6 saves during the first half.
The game really took off in the third quarter. Galena added 3 while the Huskies added 4 ending the quarter 6-11. However momentum was starting to move in Galena’s direction as their ball possession started to generate more offensive opportunities. Once again, Galena spent 2 more minutes in the penalty than the Huskies and the result cost them two of the four Huskies goals.
Galena scored twice in the fourth quarter at 2:14 and 8:01 and kept the Huskies away from their net for the entire quarter. The Huskies however, managed to control the ball for the last 4 minutes squashing any possibility for a Galena comeback and bringing the contest to an 11-8 close.

RENO eNVy LACROSSE TEAM SHOCKS BEST OF THE WEST

The Reno Envy Lacrosse team went to Las Vergas this weekend to play in The Best of The West lacrosse Tournament and put Reno lacrosse on the map by shocking all in attendance in route to making it to the championship game.
Reno Envy Lacrosse is a select travel lacrosse team comprised of players from local area lacrosse clubs and schools: Galena High School, High Sierra Huskies and The Miners Lacrosse Club. The team was coached by Bud Haley (Miners Club Team) and Andrew Hass (Galena High School). They had two freshmen starting attack in Jack Haley and Joe Rainoldi (Miners) along with Junior attack Geoff Chrisman (Galena) who accounted for the lion’s share of the offense for the team. The stingy defense was comprised of juniors Campbell Troup (Miners) Tom Ferenck (Galena) and Dayton Adams (Huskies). Aggressive middie play was led by first year player (senior) Dan Durst and Keith Steinhart (Huskies) along with sophomore brothers Austin and Ryhs Caldwell (Galena).
The Reno Envy Team came into the tournament with limited expectations because the players only had the opportunity to practice once prior to hitting the road for Las Vegas. To everyone’s surprise, the team gelled immediately and stepped up to the challenge.
They played seven games in two days and outscored their opponents 41 to 10 before falling to a talented team from Calgary Canada in the championship game 11-4.
They beat power house teams from Utah, Judge Memorial and Jordan, as well as perennial Las Vegas powers Henderson and Faith Lutheran.
Bud Haley, Reno Envy Coach stated “it was remarkable how this group of athletes from different schools gelled as a team and played at such a high level of lacrosse”, “Our athletes were complimented for their sportsmanship by all opposing players and coaches as well as being recognized by the tournament organizers for honoring the game.”
Reno Envy hopes to continue to foster the game and allow local Reno/ Tahoe athletes the chance to experience levels of competition not currently offered in the fledgling local lacrosse scene. “It helps the local players develop friendships that go beyond the local high school rivalries, increase skills while fostering an understanding of the true sprit of the game.” says coach Haley.
